Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 Million copies in the first 24 hours of its release. My gnome is 77, Araan is 79, and rumor has it that there will be a major content patch right after the new year.

 

Full of Lichy Goodness November 14, 2008

Hello, Weiner fans. Sorry to have dropped off the map yesterday, but it was the first full day of Wrath of the Lich King. Araan and I logged in an 12:01am and are level 72 and 71 now, respectively.

 

So far, WotLK is everything Blizz promised it would be. Zones are beautiful and expansive. Quests are fun and closely grouped to avoid the annoyance of crossing several zones for no apparent reason. 5-man instances take anywhere from 30-50 minutes with good XP and quest rewards.

 

Green is not the new purple, as it was in The Burning Crusade. As a high-end raider in BC, I have replaced just one piece of gear, my shoulders, which actually came from heroic Magister’s Terrace. The new shoulders are a quest reward in Coldarra, the site of the Nexus instance. From what I have seen and heard from other players, the goal here seems to replace 1-2 pieces of gear per zone until about level 75, when you can expect to have mostly Northrend gear. That’s a lot nicer than the “sticker shock” we all experienced in Outland.

 

Blue is the order of the day, both in gear and in art design. If BC was red, LK is Blue. Does this mean the next expansion will be the Emerald Dream? I think so.

 

I need to get back in game, though – some of my guildies are going to tear through Azjol-Nerub and I want in.  And don’t fret – if you’re not playing already, you will.

Curiouser and curiouser. More details keep leaking out in the wake of last week’s announcement. Today’s snippet comes from Joystiq, who reports that MTV Games won the Beatles video game licensing duel because they showed “more flexibility” than Guitar Hero publisher Activision Blizzard. By “flexibility”, they mean “willingness to not brand the game as ‘Rock Band’ or ‘Guitar Hero’. Apparently the Beatles are still worried about name recognition.

 

Hellgate Guy Finds New Home

Yes, I tried Hellgate: London.  It was fun for a few days, if repetitive.  I hoped for so much more.  So did Flagship Studios, which closed its doors permanently about four months ago.  Today Cryptic studios, maker of Champions Online, announced that Flagship’s co-founder Bill Roper will be joining Cryptic as Design Director. Roper will focus on MMOs, which, given his pre-Hellgate pedigree as the former Director of Blizzard Entertaiment, seems to be an excellent fit.

… So, does anyone think that those changes above are in any way “surgical”, or that they won’t affect PvE damage? And no one said nerfing Holy and Protection damage was part of the deal, either. Nerfing all seals affects Holy soloing and Protection tanking. A targeted seal nerf would have touched Command and Blood/Martyr only. Of course, it’s not a total nerf. You do get one extra point of attack power from Blessing of Might . . .

 

Who Ya Gonna Play? Ghostbusters!

Maybe there will be a third movie, maybe there won’t, but there will definitely be a new Ghostbusters game.

 

Kotaku is confirming that Atari has officially announced that they have picked up the Ghostbusters game. The game has been in limbo ever since the Blactivizzion merger, but is now on target for an early summer 2009 release. This release will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original movie, and also with me and most of my readers feeling old.

 

Mage & Hunter nerfs incoming; Paladins say “we told you so” October 22, 2008

Mages are also bursting with burstiness, according to Blizzard. Ghostcrawler has the nerf bat prepared for you: 

We have concerns about how bursty dps has become in PvP. On the other hand, we’re pretty happy with mage dps in PvE so we want to take care not to hurt it.For example, we discussed shifting some of Arcane’s damage between Arcane Blast and Arcane Barrage, but that actually does hurt one of Arcane’s PvE advantages over Fire — namely to be able to move around while doing some instant spells.   

In the case of Frost, however, we have become concerned that it’s too easy to blow opponents up too quickly. Two of the culprits here are instant, uninterruptible Fireballs and Deep Freeze.

We are changing Brain Freeze to only proc off of Frost spells that can chill. Specifically, this limits the tactic of trying to fish for procs with Ice Lance. Ice Lance gets used a lot more in PvP, so we don’t think this will hurt Frost as much in PvE.

Secondly, Cold as Ice no longer reduces the cooldown on Deep Freeze. Deep Freeze is an (ahem) cool spell and we don’t want to nerf it too much, but you must admit that the poor frozen shmuck can endure a lot of damage while he is locked up.
 

I’ve maintained from the beginning that if they nerfed Retribution they’d come for other classes, too. Next on the list: Hunters.

As I have suggested a few times, we are concerned that hunters of all 3 specs are doing damage that is clearly superior to other classes.[…]

Ranged attacks no longer benefit from the haste effects of Windfury Totem and Improved Icy Talons. This is a nerf to hunter white damage.

There you have it. “First they came for the Retribution Paladins, and I said nothing”…

 

Starcraft 2 To Be Split Into 3 Games; Blizzard Hires More Gnomes to Count Money October 10, 2008

According to Shacknews.com, Blizzard’s upcoming Starcraft II will be a trilogy. The first game is set to be titled “Terrans: Wings of Liberty”, the second, “Zerg: Heart of the Swarm,” and the third “Protoss: Legacy of the Void.”

 

The first game has the real meat, as the second and third “will be like expansion packs, but we really want them to feel like standalone products,” as per Blizzard’s Rob Pardo. Each game will have 26-30 missions, which compares favorably to the original Starcraft’s 30.  

 

Each campaign is slated to have “RPG elements”, whatever that means in today’s gaming world. Most disturbing, each race will have units specific not just to their race, but to their game. These units will not be available for multiplayer.

 

Blizz says they had to split this up to get the game out on time and as a quality product. I think this is the hand of Activision. Blizzard has never seemed to mind long dev times before. I, for one, don’t like the idea of paying anywhere from $90 to $150 on a game I’ve waited years to play, but if I’m actually getting three games’ worth of content, it might be reasonable.  Anyone else think Blizz is loading up lore for World of Starcraft?

 

Late note – Rob Pardo tells us that SC2 is on the three year “plan” (don’t hold them to this). Thus, if we see Starcraft II: Terran Pajama Party in 2009, you won’t see Protoss Pretty Ponies until at least 2011.
